If you take a look at local and international design fairs you’ll notice how there is a resurgence of interest in African style.
In home décor, those in the know are turning to Africa, and specifically South Africa for inspiration. Maryke Eloff from Gommagomma explains how you can incorporate this long-lasting trend into your home.
When you think about southern Africa, images of bushveld come to mind. The natural tones, patterns and textures of the landscapes complement almost any décor scheme, creating a serene, elegant, yet down to earth atmosphere.
African motifs such as animal prints, wooden masks and African crafts are being re-appropriated into modern households, celebrating a fusion of African and contemporary design. Eloff suggests creating visual impact by incorporating exotic scatter cushions and heavily textured rugs with a practical couch.
Home is where the heart is
More homeowners and interior designers are incorporating traditional and contemporary African elements to enhance a space, whether it is in small accent pieces or as a continuing theme throughout the home. “It’s important to create a sense of authenticity and timelessness in your home,” Eloff says.
She says the furniture from Gommagomma is built to last for years, as furniture should, and says that it’s not just patterns, colours and textures that define African home décor. There is also a sense of family and togetherness that a furniture piece can imbue in a home. She says when purchasing a large piece of furniture, it’s important to consider the level of craftsmanship and quality as it’s an investment piece that you could pass on to other family members one day.
“Africa isn’t called the mother continent for nothing, and we should celebrate that in our daily lives,” Eloff says. Home décor is a means of self-articulation, a way in which we can express our stories and celebrate where we come from.
One way to support South African businesses is to scour local markets for traditional, natural toned pieces to incorporate into your home décor without breaking your budget.
